Thank you for interest in applying to the Emory University Interventional Radiology Residency Program. Our applicants come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We seek candidates who have diversity in both their academic and personal experiences. For this application year, we will have four (R1) interventional radiology resident positions in the Medical Student Match in March.
Applications for the Interventional Radiology Residency Program (PGY-2 through PGY-5) must be made through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We fill our Interventional Radiology Residency Program positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Application Requirements
- ERAS application including your personal statement
- Three letters of recommendation
- Medical school transcript
- Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE), sometimes called the "Dean's Letter"
- USMLE Step I score
- Applicants must complete or have completed at least one year of ACGME-accredited postgraduate training in a clinical specialty such as internal medicine, transitional year, or surgery
Applications are accepted after September 15 of each application year. All application materials must be received by November 15; materials received after that date may not be considered. Our receipt of the medical school transcript and all other application materials, with the exception of the Dean's letter, by October 1 may facilitate an early screening of your application for an interview.
A personal interview is required and is granted at the discretion of the program director and/or Residency Selection Committee. Applications are reviewed in total and take into consideration aspects of the applicant's experiences including USMLE score(s); letters of recommendation; evaluations/grades during preclinical and clinical years; membership in AOA; and research. Participation in projects or research related to interventional radiology and in the Society of Interventional Radiology shows commitment to the field. If an interview is offered, the applicant will be contacted by the Residency Program Director's Office.
If you are interested in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program you will have to apply separately. If you are offered an interview for both programs, they will take place on the same day.

PGY-1 Transitional Year
The Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program is sponsored by the Department of Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and meets the standards of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program is part of the larger Transitional Year Internship program. Of that program's 24 total positions, there are currently seven (7) positions available each year for individuals matching for Diagnostic Radiology or Interventional Radiology Residency at Emory. The other positions are designated for other advanced specialty programs such as Neurology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Radiation Oncology, and PM&R.
The overall goal of the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program is to produce well-rounded residents and provided a well-balanced experience through a variety of clinical settings and hospital environments. In addition to the clinical service, there are a variety of educational activities. Interns will participate in daily educational noon conferences, small group sessions, and our monthly Transitional Year Core lecture series.
Coming to Emory for your preliminary year has these added benefits:
- Earlier acclimation to the large and complex Emory system;
- Earlier introduction to the Department of Radiology faculty and upper-level residents;
- Opportunities in starting longitudinal research/quality improvement projects; and
- Solidification of relationships with other residents practicing at Emory in other subspecialties.
Curriculum
Monthly rotation distribution for radiology interns includes the following:
- 5 Internal Medicine ward months
- 1 medical ICU month
- 1 combined ER month (2 weeks adult/2 weeks pediatrics)
- 1 primary care month
- 2 radiology elective months**
- 2 additional electives (at least 1 in Internal Medicine)
** There is a maximum of two months of radiology allowed by ACGME during your internship. Rotations in the Department of Radiology include Neuroradiology, Abdominal Imaging, and Interventional Radiology depending on future residency (DR or IR). Interventional radiology residents will rotate through Abdominal and Interventional Radiology while the diagnostic radiology residents will rotate through Neuroradiology and Abdominal Imaging unless there are extenuating circumstances. There is also the opportunity to participate in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound which is administered by the Department of Emergency Medicine (and does not count toward the two-month radiology limit).
Electives
Interns have the opportunity to shape their Transitional Year to accommodate their academic interests. Although there is a wide breadth of options for electives (one of which has to be in Internal Medicine), the following are examples of established electives:
- Neuropathology
- Emergency Medicine Ultrasound
- Ophthalmology
- Research
- Rheumatology
- Pathology
- Ocular Pathology
- Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Palliative Care
- Surgical ICU
- Pain Management
- Neurology Movement Disorders
- Dermatopathology
- Sports Medicine
- EEG/Neurophysiology
- Epilepsy
- Allergy/Immunology
Instructions for Application
Although the Emory Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (PGY-1) is administered by the Emory Transitional Year Program, the application process for the two programs is different.
If you want to be considered for the Transitional Radiology Program, you still must send an application through ERAS to the main Transitional Program (1113999PO) even though you are not technically applying to the main Transitional Program. This is the only way to assure all of the information needed for your internship is available to the main Transitional Program should you match into the Transitional Radiology Program.
The two programs have different numbers in the NRMP match. Please be sure you are using the NRMP number for the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (1113999P3) when you make your secondary rank list for Emory Diagnostic Radiology. You cannot match into the Transitional Radiology Program if you do not match to the Emory Diagnostic/Interventional Radiology program.
There is no guarantee that you will get a spot in the Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program even if you match at Emory for Diagnostic Radiology. The popularity of the internship is compounded by the introduction of the IR/DR program (who are also vying for transitional year spots). Please make sure to include alternative internship programs to your secondary rank list.
Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program | 1113999P3 |
Transitional Year Program | 1113999P0 |
Diagnostic Radiology Residency | 1113420A0 |
Interventional Radiology Residency | 1113416A0 |
If you want to be considered for the Transitional Radiology Program, you do not need to interview separately with the main Transitional Program. Your Radiology Program interview is sufficient.
If you want to rank the main Emory Transitional Year (non-radiology) Program on any secondary list use the main Transitional Program NRMP number 1113999PO.
Summary of Application Process
- Apply to Advanced Radiology Program (Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology) in ERAS
- Apply to General Transitional Year Program (1113999PO) in ERAS
- Interview with Emory Radiology
- Rank Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology Program primary rank list
- Rank Transitional Radiology Preliminary Program (1113999P3) in the secondary rank list followed by other preliminary programs or the Non-Radiology Transitional Year Program NRMP number (1113999PO).
