There are three potential pathways into the Interventional Radiology Residency Program.
Emory Interventional Radiology - Integrated Residency:
The Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency Program (IR-I residency) is composed of an internship and five years of IR training. Training is identical to the diagnostic radiology residency (DR) training for the first three years. In the fourth year (PGY-5, IRI-4), training becomes concentrated in the clinical and procedural aspects of interventional radiology practice. Clinical rotations in the IRI-4 year include vascular surgery, transplant hepatology, surgical ICU, critical care/pulmonary ICU, medical oncology, and medical consultation services. The remainder of the IRI-4 year is dedicated to interventional radiology rotations and the completion of any remaining requirements in order to sit for the diagnostic radiology boards. The IRI-5 year is a concentrated year of procedural interventional radiology with emphasis on providing excellent longitudinal patient care.
Leadership: Zachary Bercu, MD, RPVI, IR-I Program Director (Interim)

Emory Interventional Radiology - Independent Residency:
We have been approved for the Independent Interventional Radiology Residency. The training is equivalent to the IRI4 and IRI5 years of the integrated program described above. It is possible to enter the independent IR residency into the 2nd year if the resident qualifies as ESIR (see below).
Please submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Leadership: Nima Kokabi, MD, IR Independent Residency Program Director (Interim)
Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR):
ACGME has stipulated that residents may enter the Independent Interventional Radiology Residency Program at the advanced PGY-7 level if they completed a diagnostic radiology residency program that is qualified to provide sufficient interventional radiology experience during the diagnostic radiology residency. Emory University's Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program has received and been approved for the ESIR Designation.
Please submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Can I see the IR residency program requirements?
The approved IR residency program requirements are posted on the ACGME website.
IR/DR certification:
Graduates of an interventional radiology residency are qualified to take the IR/DR examination offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The IR/DR certificate recognizes competency in both diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology. Certificate holders can practice both diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology.
