6th Postdoc Research Symposium

Organized by OPE and Research Symposium Committee

9am-5pm @ SOM 120, May 16, 2013

The Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) and the Postdoctoral Research Symposium Committee invite all postdoctoral fellows to submit an abstract for the 6th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium. Abstracts and posters can be those already presented at scientific meetings within the last year or are being prepared for future meetings.  A number of abstracts will be chosen for oral presentations by the Postdoctoral Research Symposium Committee. All abstracts must be submitted to Lisa Flowers at lflowe3@emory.edu as an attached WORD document.

The Symposium will bring together all Postdoctoral Fellows in the Biomedical Sciences at Emory University to share their work with the greater Emory community as well as facilitate scientific exchange among Postdoctoral Fellows. The keynote speaker will be announced at a later date. Events will include posters, oral presentations, Outstanding Mentor Awards and Honor Awards for Postdoctoral Fellows who have distinguished themselves in research in the past year. There will be four sessions of 10-minute presentations and two poster sessions during the day. The day will end with a Reception/Social at 5:00pm.

We look forward to your abstract submission.

1st Science Writing Workshop

Organized by Science Writers Committee

noon - 4pm @ SOM 130, May 22, 2013

This workshop seeks to provide Emory Postdoctoral Fellows with an opportunity to interact with and learn from academic researchers who have expertise in writing and reviewing manuscripts for high impact journals. This event will be divided into two 90-minute sessions: 1) A panel-led discussion involving speakers who will talk candidly about developing and enhancing vital writing and reviewer skills for high impact journals. 2) A hands-on, confidential, manuscript review session where Postdocs will get direct feedback on their manuscripts in preparation from experienced academic writers. For details see our Flyer.

Happy Researching!

Green Card Workshop

Organized by IPC and OPE

2-3:30pm @ SOM 120, Feb 20, 2013

The International Postdocs Commitee (IPC) and the Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) are organizing a "Green Card Workshop". The aim of this workshop is to inform international scholars (e.g., postdocs) their options for obtaining a U.S. permanent residency (green card). There will be a presentation by an immigration lawyer, followed by the account of a postdoc from her own experience in obtaining a green card. The workshop will finish with a Q&A session. Please let the IPC or the OPE know if you have feedback regarding the shaping this workshop. See Flyer!

Emory Postdoc Survey

Organized by Postdoc Association

Survey closed!

The Postdoc Association has prepared a survey that gives Emory postdocs from the Postdoc Association a platform to ask other Emory postdocs about their opinions and demographics. We plan to keep this information confidential and publish only anonymous statistics from it. This survey will help us organize ourselves to best meet the needs of the Emory postdoc community. For one, we will be better able to organize events and workshops. It will also make life better for incoming postdocs since we and Emory will be more prepared for them. Outgoing postdocs will be kept in the loop by providing a more permanent email address. So please be sure to follow the link from the email or from above and fill out the survey as much as you can -- we left several personal questions optional in case you prefer to remain discreet.

Thanks in advance for participation!

Emory Postdoc Appreciation Day

Organized by OPE and Postdoc Association

As part of the National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Emory University Office of Postdoctoral Education and the Emory Postdoctoral Association hosted an afternoon-long seminar entitled: “Career Opportunities in the Biomedical and Biological Sciences” followed by a wine and cheese reception on September 22nd, 2012. This seminar, from 1-5p at the Emory School of Medicine Auditorium 110, featured scientists from a wide variety of academic, industry, clinical and government research positions as well as scientists focused on teaching and administrative positions at 4 year and Research Institutions.  Speakers gave a 10-minute talk about their work and role, followed by audience questions. Participating postdocs were also invited to the wine and cheese reception, from 5-6pm, immediately following the seminar, where they talked with the speakers and mingled with other postdocs.

Thank you OPE and Dr. DeLong for organizing such an informative and fun afternoon event!
