#RYSE Virtual Visiting Clerkship Program

The RYSE Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within Emory's Department of Medicine invites medical students from groups underrepresented in medicine, including but not limited to underrepresented minorities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, to apply for our RYSE Virtual Visiting Student Mini-Clerkship. This two-week, non-graded virtual experience, which specifically targets students who intend to apply to and pursue a career in internal medicine (or an IM subspecialty), exposes students to a thriving academic medical center and careers in medicine. Students who apply to the mini-clerkship do not have to submit an application to Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) since this experience is not a formal elective.
Accepted students will receive:
- A faculty mentor
- A resident mentor
- Exposure to educational activities at Emory in the Department of Medicine
- Virtual exposure to clinical sites at Emory
- An opportunity to meet with residency leaders in the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program
- A stipend in the amount of $250 will be given upon successful completion of the experience
GA Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program / Atlanta Medical Association Partnership
The Georgia Gear, Georgia’s Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded 5-year cooperative agreement awarded to Emory University. RYSE’s partnership with the GA-GEAR includes the Atlanta Medical Association and intends to provide Emory faculty and community-based physicians, and learners from historically underrepresented backgrounds networking, professional development, and community service opportunities.
Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Faculty Development Program

The School of Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Medicine Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Council with support from Health Resources and Services Administration are pleased to offer a 5-month career development program for underrepresented minority faculty. This longitudinal program provides resources, information and tools important for academic success. The course features didactic sessions from diverse speakers, experiential components, along with peer mentoring and networking. Participants are also paired with organizational leaders as coaches during this process.
Diversity Recruitment Days — Internal Medicine Residency
The J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency program has specific interview days that offers students from underrepresented backgrounds a unique opportunity to engage with faculty and residents to learn more about the department, opportunities and available resources.
Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are groups with common interests and issues. We anticipate that these groups and networks will exist not only to benefit their own group members; but also that they work both inwardly and outwardly to edify group members as well as the department as a whole.
Ideally, affinity and ally groups should:
- Support DOM efforts to attract and retain the best talent
- Promote leadership and development at all ranks
- Build an internal support system for faculty and staff
- Encourage diversity and inclusion at all levels
Churchwell Diversity & Inclusion Collective

The group, named after Dr. André Churchwell, the first black IM Chief Resident at Emory, advocates for matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the resident level. The CDIC hosts a series of professional development and networking programs on a monthly basis. Members also serve on the department's DEI Council.
Minority Fellowship Applicant Experience
The Emory University Department of Medicine Minority Fellowship Applicant Experience (MFAX) is a 1.5 day multifaceted program designed for URiM applicants to 8 of our ACGME-accredited subspecialty training programs. Each program will select up to two MFAX participants through an application process. All MFAX participants will come to the MFAX Program during the specific dates as planned per the Emory University Department of Medicine Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
