This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Greg Jones, Associate Vice President for Health Affairs, Woodruff Health Sciences Center
Dear colleagues,
At the direction of Dr. Ravi Thadhani, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Executive Director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and Dr. Ravi Bellamkonda, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, we recently launched a national and international search to identify a successor to Dr. Vikas Sukhatme as the next Dean of the Emory University School of Medicine (SOM).
We have charged the Search Advisory Committee, while also engaging in a series of stakeholder interviews across the enterprise in partnership with Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA), our global leadership advisory and executive search partners, to understand the organization’s key needs.
As the Dean search proceeds, we would like to provide a brief overview of the position and key requirements:
-
The Dean of Emory University School of Medicine is responsible for the overall direction, oversight, quality of the research and educational and clinical missions of the school, which is comprised of 3,271 faculty in 27 academic departments.
-
The Dean oversees all matters relating to the administration of the SOM, including curriculum, faculty, staff, students, facilities, resources, budget, alumni, fundraising and relationships with the University and communities outside of the University.
-
Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, who also serves as the Executive Director, Woodruff Health Sciences Center and Vice Chair, Emory Healthcare, as well as reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs for academic initiatives, programs and matters, including faculty appointments and promotions and tenure, the Dean of the School of Medicine is responsible for successful alignment across the Woodruff Health Sciences Center’s missions of education and research.
- The next Dean will be a talented leader, researcher, educator and physician with a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to mentorship and professional development for faculty, staff and students.
-
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have earned an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and academic credentials sufficient to engender respect within Emory and the national academic community at large.
-
The successful candidate will have had progressive, broad leadership experience in complex academic environments. This individual will have experience in academia commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Full Professor.
If you are personally interested in being confidentially considered for this position, we invite you to express interest directly to RRA. Russell Reynolds will then provide you with more detail about the full position description and our application process, including submission of your CV and letter of interest.
