Office of Research and Strategic Initiatives

Program Announcement:
The Strategic Plan for Research in the School of Medicine calls for a greater emphasis on programmatic (team) science research applications, as well as the development of an incentive program to facilitate the preparation of such proposals. With support from the Dean, and with the advice of the Research Advisory Committee, the Office of Research is pleased to re-announce and extend a program to facilitate the preparation and submission of NIH programmatic grant applications.

Dean's P or U Series Preparation Award:
This award will be funded on a non-competitive basis from the Dean's Office with awards of up to $10,000 available to Program Directors who are committed to the submission of a P or U Series program grant application within 12 months following the Preparation Award. Generally, appropriate uses would include expenses for internal and external advisory groups, planning meetings of collaborating investigators, visits to other programs, clerical support, office supplies, etc. Program Directors should complete an on-line application that includes a brief overall description of the grant, planned date of submission and a listing of tentative projects, project leaders and a reference to the relevant RFP, if any. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, without deadlines and reviewed on a monthly basis.
Preparation Awards for programmatic grant applications to NIH for other multi-investigator grants or to funding agencies other than NIH will be considered on a "funds-available" basis. To be eligible, funding must be nationally peer-reviewed. Funding of amended applications will be considered competitively, based on review of summary statements and planned revisions and responses. Since the cost of putting together a program project grant can be enormous, Departments are encouraged to match the seed grant from the Dean’s Office, and Program Directors are encouraged to utilize their discretionary funds from other sources.
