Internal: Emergency Research Funds

These funds are available on short notice from the Office of the Executive Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives. Request for support from the Emergency Research Fund may be submitted at any time. Applications will ordinarily be reviewed and acted upon within ten (10) working days. These funds are intended primarily for use in situations where amounts up to $15,000 are needed to help repair or replace failed or broken instruments and equipment urgently needed to continue ongoing research. The funds are not to be used to pay for service or maintenance contracts. The funds can be used for salaries under special circumstances. All requests will be considered on a case by case basis by a sub-committee of the Research Advisory Committee, and a recommendation will be made to the Research Dean. The investigator will be notified in writing of the final decision.

In all instances the department of the principal investigator is expected to match the amount contributed by the School. Needs in excess of $15,000 can only be considered under special circumstances and will be referred to the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) for review at its next monthly meeting.

All requests must be submitted by a department chairperson to the Executive Associate Dean / Research and Strategic Initiatives with three (3) copies (including the Chairperson's transmittal letter, please see below).

Requests should contain the following information:

  • A research project outline and description of proposed repairs or equipment purchase. The research project outline should contain the aims of the project, methodology, significance of work, and a brief background review. The outline must not exceed two pages typed according to the convention established by the NIH CSR (Center for Scientific Review).
  • A list of all current research support to include active grants, pending grants, and any previous support from the Emergency Research Fund.
  • The scientific review sheets (pink sheets) and the priority score from NIH or other extramural granting agencies for grant support directly related to the proposed project.
  • A detailed budget.
  • A brief curriculum vitae with a bibliography of no more than your ten most significant recent publications. (One page)

The Department Chairperson should write a transmittal letter justifying the request of Emergency Research Funds for this purpose and committing the department to match the funds provided by the School.

Preferred uses of the Emergency Research Funds include the following in order of priority:

  • Provision of funds to repair or replace urgently needed equipment costing $3,000 to $15,000.
  • Temporary assistance with salary for post-doctoral fellows or technical staff pending receipt of committed grant funds.
  • Pilot projects designed to prepare an investigator to compete for extramural funds.

If subsequent to an award of emergency research funds, a faculty member is awarded an extramural grant that covers the items paid for with these emergency funds, the support from the ERF will terminate.

Only applications on behalf of regular, full-time faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor and above will be considered. Except under very special circumstances, allocations to individual applicants will not be made in excess of $15,000. Similarly, reapplications by the same investigator will not usually be considered within 3 years.

Work funded under the ERF must meet all regulatory requirements of Emory University School of Medicine.
