Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation - Moore Inventor Fellows

Internal Due Date: Past Due - Coordinator: Holly Sommers

Foundation Due Date: Due early May annually

Number of Applications: 2

The Moore Inventor Fellows program is a new program designed to identify outstanding early-stage inventors who harness science and technology solutions to enhance scientific research, strengthen environmental conservation, or improve the experience and outcomes of patient care.

Emory University has been invited to up to two nominations from your university. Selected fellows will receive funding for three years at a level of $200,000 per year from the Moore Foundation. Candidates must be faculty or staff members at eligible institutions and must be within ten (10) years of receiving the terminal degree in their field (e.g., PhD or MD). The Foundation seeks ideas grounded in science that promise to transform activity in an area of interest to the foundation: natural science, environmental conservation and patient experience and care. They seek a combination of demonstrated promise of the individual and a compelling idea in which marked progress toward a defined goal can be measured during the three years of support. Further, the Foundation aims to support ideas at an early stage that could lead to proof-of-concept or advance an existing prototype toward application.

In addition to funds for the fellow, the foundation will provide $25,000 each year to the university to cover costs associated with administering the grant award, resulting in a total three-year award of $675,000. Host institutions will be required to make a contribution of $50,000 in annual direct support of the inventor’s work.

Internal Competition Guidelines: Interested applicants must submit an abstract of their proposed projects (not to exceed 2 pages) and an NIH-style biosketch to Holly Sommers via e-mail ( by no later than the internal deadline above for consideration. Please put Moore Inventor Fellows Program in the subject line of the e-mail. Please be sure that the abstract includes a statement of invention describing the idea, stage of invention and potential impact in the area of science, environmental conservation, or patient care and experience. It is helpful if the abstract and biosketch are submitted in a single PDF file with the abstract first.  Please note that written reviews or summary statements from the internal review and selection process will not be available.
