Guidelines for Promotion

Each program must have a policy regarding promotion of residents to a higher level of training and the School of Medicine and the GMEC support programs' guidelines.  Each training program should develop promotion guidelines that enforce its mission statement and follow recommendations of its Board and the competencies of the.  Promotionsmust be based on assessments that could include, but are not limited to, in-training examination results, USMLE results and the attainment of milstones.  Residents who have had leaves of absence, for instance FMLA, may be subject to an extension of training in order to fulfill Board training-requirements.  Individual Boards will control this issue, and residents should be informed.  The program also must follow state law regarding license and permits to practice medicine in the state of Georgia.
