Dr Merlin joined Emory University in July 1997 as a postdoctoral fellow in Department of Pathology. He was promoted instructor in 2000 and assistant professor in 2001. In 2003 he joined the Department of Medicine, Division of Digestive disease as an assistant professor. He brings to the division a strong foundation in basic research in membrane transport and epithelial cells. Since joining the division of digestive disease, he has successfully established an independent research program in his laboratory. Dr. Merlin was promoted as an Associate Professor with Tenure in 2006. Dr Merlin professional activities are focused on developing a solid and comprehensive research program in his laboratory, and participating in various teaching and services. The main research projects are centered in intestinal epithelia research, specifically in following areas: 1)The role of membrane transporters in intestinal inflammation that is directly related to Intestinal Bowel Disease (IBD); 2) The role of the cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in the intestinal barrier function; 3) The role of luminal leptin in IBD. In addition to research related activities, he spends 15% of my time in teaching and services such as teaching at Emory and being member at various committees at national and international levels.
