Emergency Medicine

Where and for how many years did you train AFTER medical school:

Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC

  • Intern/Resident Physician, 2006-2009
  • Chief Resident in Emergency Medicine, 2008-2009

How did you choose your specialty?

I enjoy seeing the acute phase of an illness, doing procedures, having knowledge across a breadth of specialties and by the nature of where I choose to practice (public, safety-net hospital), and the ability to fulfill a personal and professional mission to serve my community in this particular way.

What do you like MOST, and like LEAST, about your specialty?

  • Most: Acuity of illness, the undifferentiated patient, interconnectedness with public health, shift work, knowing that I can provide immediate care to someone in need.
  • Least: We never close - working holidays, evening and weekends away from family.

In your opinion, what attributes are important in anyone choosing this specialty?

  • Need to be able to find your own "calm" in the midst of significant chaos / be able to think critically in that environment.
  • Must be able to easily multi-task and prioritize (think 10+ active patients at the same time)
  • Enjoy doing procedures.
  • Understanding that high acuity patients are only about 25-30% in most ED settings.

Hobbies/special interests:

  • HIV Screening in Acute Care Settings
  • Medical and Resident Education
