Your Specialty:

Where and for how many years did you train AFTER medical school:

  • PGY 1 - Internal Medicine, University of Washington
  • PGY 2-4 – Psychiatry, Emory SOM
  • 6 years - Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute

How did you choose your specialty?

To me, nothing is more interesting than the human mind.  Psychiatry combines both psychology and medicine and affords you the opportunity to get to know the whole person and intervene in meaningful and personal ways.  Combining art and science, who would want to do anything else?

What do you like MOST, and like LEAST, about your specialty?

  • Most:  The chance to understand and help folks from a medical and psychological level, long term patient relationships, intellectually fascinating.
  • Least:  Not particularly financially rewarding.

In your opinion, what attributes are important in anyone choosing this specialty?

  • Intellectually curious.
  • Interested in medicine and psychology.
  • Able to tolerate uncertainty.
  • OK with not being the "boss" in patient encounters, comfortable in one's own skin.

Hobbies/special interests:

  • Road cycling/bicycling
  • Reading
  • Art history
  • Poetry
  • Whatever my kids are doing
