Emergency Medicine

1988 – 1991 Emory University; Department of Medicine

How did you choose your specialty?

I like all types of people and felt emergency medicine would fit.  Also, I enjoy doing procedures such as suturing and splinting.  Set hours were important for family life.

What do you like MOST, and like LEAST, about your specialty?

MOST – Caring for people and making a difference for them.

LEAST – The hours look easier on paper than they actually are.  The outside world does not understand that you are working nights or evenings, for example.

In your opinion, what attributes are important in anyone choosing this specialty?

  • Kindness
  • Caring
  • Patience
  • Empathy

Hobbies/special interests:

Since 2000, I have worked part-time as a ship physician for Linblad Expeditions with National Geographic.  This has supported my passion for marine wildlife.  It also combines my interest in wilderness medicine and cruise medicine.

Currently I work as a medical consultant for Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency.
