Dr. Sharon Weiss was appointed as Assistant Dean for Faculty Development in the fall of 2005 and promoted to Associate Dean in September, 2006. A graduate of Wellesley College and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she is a surgical pathologist world renowned for her consultative expertise in soft tissue tumors. In her capacity as Vice Chair (and previously Interim Chair) of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, she brings both a strong administrative background and deep appreciation of faculty issues to this position.  She possesses an excellent knowledge of the promotion process through her previous roles as Chair of the Promotions Committee at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and member of the President’s Advisory Committee at Emory, which votes on all tenure -track promotions university-wide.  She has held numerous leadership positions nationally and internationally including President of the United States-Canadian Academy of Pathology, President of the International Society of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, Trustee of the American Board of  Pathology, and member of the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors.

Although Dr. Weiss has always been intimately involved in the recruitment, retention, and development of pathology faculty, she notes, “T his position is even more challenging because I work with a greater cross section of faculty. I tell faculty we expend great effort in their recruitment and they have a right to succeed. It is our responsibility to make certain they have access to the information and tools to do so.
