General Information

Ultrasonography,  a new technique for nephrologists, is currently not an established part of nephrology training programs.  This mini-fellowship  provides the intensive training that practicing nephrologists and academic nephrologists will require to become competent in this technique.

Learning Objectives

This course is designed for nephrologists who have already taken “Ultrasonography for Nephrologists” or have previous experience and/or training in ultrasonography.  Learning objectives include:

  1. the performance of complete ultrasound examinations of native kidneys, end-stage kidneys, and transplant kidneys, and bladders.
  2. guidance for percutaneous biopsy of native and transplanted kidneys,
  3. guidance for central venous catheter insertion,
  4. detailed interpretation of renal ultrasound,
  5. writing of reports,
  6. coding and billing of ultrasound studies,
  7. use of a database to store data, file images, and generate reports,

Agenda

The program is basically unstructured. The attendee will accompany the nephrology fellow assigned to ultrasonography as s/he performs ultrasound examinations under the supervision of Dr. O'Neill. Time will be spent learning how to operate the equipment, position the patients, image the kidneys, and interpret real-time images. The course faculty will review, with the attendee, teaching files and learning procedures for coding and billing. At the end of each day the attendee will join the ultrasound team to participate in the reading and reporting of the day's ultrasound examinations.
