It is the intent of Emory University School of Medicine to assure that its educational mission, and Continuing Medical Education activities in particular, should not be influenced by the special interests of individuals associated with its programs. GENERAL INFORMATION

This five day seminar is open to all professionals of the health care team, including physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and others with present or planned involvement in the management and education of individuals with diabetes mellitus. Multi-discipline health care teams interested in organizing or improving a diabetes program are especially encouraged to attend.Professionals preparing to take the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) examination will find the course facilitates their study.

The course is taught by physicians, nurses, dietitians, podiatrists, and other members of the health care team in the Diabetes Unit of The Grady Health System.

Time is allocated for observation in the clinical setting with various members of the health care team.
 
 
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Experiences are planned in the three domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. After completing the course the participant should:

• Understand the management goals and strategies for each type of diabetes.

• Understand the classification and pathogenesis of the types of diabetes.

• Know the acute and chronic complications, and their management and prevention.

• Identify nutritional goals and strategies.

• Identify teaching/learning methods that will enhance patient education.

• Explain the rationale for utilizing the multidisciplinary team approach.

• Be cognizant of future treatment and prevention procedures.
 
HOUSING
Housing arrangements may be made at a dorm near the Diabetes Unit and Grady Memorial Hospital. The charge for these accommodations, for which two professionals are assigned per room, is $10 per night.

A list of hotels in the area and their approximate costs may be obtained upon request when you submit your application.
 
CREDITS
The Georgia Nurses Association and the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy awards 31 contact hours. The American Dietetic Association awards 27 continuing education units.

The Emory University School of Medicine designates this continuing medical education activity for 31 credit hours in Category 1 of the physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
 
TUITION
A non-refundable tuition fee is required for Georgia residents;
             $100.00 for non-physicians
             $150.00 for physicians.

A $500.00 tuition fee is required for non-Georgia residents. All fees must accompany the completed application. Checks should be made payable to Emory University. Enrollment will be limited to 14 applicants. Cancellation will be honored if notification is received 14 days before the scheduled course.
 
The Emory University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education  sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
