GENERAL
INFORMATION
The course is structured for psychiatrists and their
nursing staff interested in the therapeutic efficacy of ECT and the
procedures for the administration of ECT.
1. Understand the current literature of the theoretical basis
for the therapeutic efficacy of ECT and the procedures
for the safe and effective administration of ECT.
2. Review the policies and procedures required by JCAH and
APA 1999 guidelines including necessary forms, pre-ECT
work-up and post-ECT evaluation and follow-up.
3. Practical experience in pre-ECT evaluations, observing
ECT treatments, recovery and follow-up. The student will
receive one-on-one training with an instructor.
This program is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry,
Emory University School of Medicine.
Each fellowship is limited to psychiatrists
in order to personalize the individuals’ experience.
Dates are scheduled year round per student request and faculty availability.
The psychiatrist(s) may bring up to two nursing staff from their program
which usually includes the ECT charge nurse and a recovery room nurse. These
additional staff will be included in all didactic sessions and will spend
the clinical time understanding how to administer the treatments (the actual
placement of the electrode), do pre-op evaluations and recovery room procedures.
Option 1: Three-day course tuition for one student (psychiatrist)
and additional staff members is:
$1,200 per psychiatrist
$600 per non-physician (limited to two)
All fees must accompany the registration form. The tuition includes a task force report of the American Psychiatric Association on Electroconvulsive Therapy, lunch, one-on-one training with an instructor and other amenities which make this a rewarding learning experience. Enrollment will be limited
to three registrants. Cancellation 14 days prior to the program will be
refunded less a $50 administrative fee.
The Emory University School of Medicine designates this continuing
medical education activity for 18 credit hours for the three-day sessions.
Credit hours are Category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the
American Medical Association. Each attendee should claim only those hours
of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
The sessions will be held at Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital,
1821 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30329. The Wesley Woods Geriatric
Hospital is located near the Emory University campus.
